Who doesn’t love to eat? We often find excuses to head to our favorite restaurant or diner during payday just to enjoy their meals or spend the weekend binge eating in front of the TV to catch up on our shows, but the kinds of food that we eat, can affect our gut health.

Our digestive system is the one responsible for breaking down all the food that we are eating, to get the nutrients that they contain. However, with the diet that we are following lately, it seems that our digestion is taking a hit. If you are feeling sluggish, and suffering from bowel problems, lethargy, and the like, it is likely that your digestive system needs some help. That being said, here are a few steps that you can take to improve your gut health, so you will feel better in no time.

Consume both insoluble and soluble fibers

Your gut needs these two types of fiber in order to function better. Insoluble fiber is the one that adds bulk to our stools, so they will be eliminated efficiently. Soluble fiber, on the other hand, prevents our stool from becoming too watery. Vegetables, wheat bran, and whole grains are good sources of these fibers.

Go for lean meats

We need protein in our diet, but you should go for lean meats rather than the fatty ones as the latter can be difficult to digest in our system. A better option would be skinless poultry as well as pork loin as they are easier on the stomach.

It would be a good idea to stick to a schedule when it comes to your meals, as this will help your digestive system working properly. Just like when it comes to your sleep schedule, you should also make a schedule on when you will be taking your regular meals and snacks every day.

Handle your stress

Stress levels can also interrupt our digestive function which can affect the rest of our bodily functions. This is easier said than done, but if you can manage your stress levels, it will be beneficial to you in the long run. Being anxious or stressed out can affect your gut health which is what you need to avoid.

Hydrate always

As much as possible, drink up to 8 glasses of water per day to stay hydrated. The fiber that you are eating will get water in the colon to bulk your stool up to be flushed out from the body.
